So, the questions is, what is a timeshare? In a nutshell, a timeshare is basically when someone has ownership into a particular resort. This could be, for example, a Hilton, Wyndham, Westgate, Marriott, and so on. When someone has ownership in a resort, they are a timeshare owner. They pay maintenance fees every year or every other year to maintain that ownership.
Now some may be thinking, what is the difference between a resort and a hotel? That’s the million dollar question. A hotel unit is your typical bed or two bed set up, with bathroom, and there may be a microwave and a small refrigerator. Everything is all in one room, kind of like a studio. Resort unit are condo style. They usually have a full or partial kitchen, with bedroom or bedroom separate from a living room are, just as if you were to be walking into a condo. If you were to see this type of unit at a normal hotel, this would be their upgraded unit (maybe they call it a Signature Suite or Presidential Suite, etc…). Whereas with a resort, this style of unit is the norm. Also usually with a normal hotel, you may have one or two buildings, whereas it is quite common for a resort property to have multiple structures. For example, Phase 1 may have all of the 1 bedroom units, Phase 2 having the 2 bedroom units, and so on. On a resort property, it is typical for there to be at least one restaurant, a spa, many may have a golf course or mini golf course. It is quite common for both a hotel and a resort to have a pool, but when it comes to a resort, there may be multiple pools, possibly a lazy river, possibly water slides, etc… The ultimate goal with a resort is to have pretty much everything that the visitor needs available to them right there on the property. The goal of a hotel is to provide a comfortable stay for the visitor, but many amenities may still be off property.
